Taiwan maintains its status as a rabies-free country
since 1961 through strict import regulations
administered by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health
Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ).
Pets from Hong Kong are classified under non-rabies-
free countries, requiring comprehensive vaccination,
blood testing, and documentation procedures. As of
February 2024, Taiwan offers two pathways for pet
entry with different quarantine requirements based on
RNATT blood test waiting periods and import permit
application timing.Start planning 7-8 months in advance: This timeline is crucial
for completing all required tests, vaccinations, and waiting
periods

1. . Country Classification & Quarantine Requirements
Taiwan classifies countries as rabies-free and non-rabies-
free:
Rabies-Free Countries: Australia, Iceland, Japan, New
Zealand, Sweden, UK, Singapore, Hawaii, Guam, Estonia,
Norway (excluding Svalbard)
Non-Rabies-Free Countries: All others including Hong Kong -
requires full import procedures and 7two pathways for pet

2. Age & Residence Requirements
Minimum age for import: 10 months old at time of entry
Pets must have continuously resided in Hong Kong for at
least 6 months prior to export
Minimum age for rabies vaccination: 90 days
3. Microchipping
ISO compliant 15-digit microchip mandatory
Microchip must be implanted before or on same day as
rabies vaccination
4. Vaccination Requirements
Core vaccinations required and must be current
Rabies vaccination mandatory - administered minimum 30
days before RNAT blood test
Vaccination must be given no earlier than 90 days of age
